Big days, here! Progress is happening in the kitchen, so I'm going to show you a few pictures, okay?
After realizing that we really needed to get the old floor covering up we decided to pull it up ourselves. It was pretty easy to get the top layer, but when we tried a heat gun and scraper for the under-layer and glue, we could see right away that we couldn't do it ourselves. An installer came and advised that we lay a 1/16 inch thick plywood subfloor over the old subfloor, so it looks like we'll have him do it.
Fernando, our cabinet wizard, took the doors off 3 weeks ago and has been refinishing them. I've been unloading all the cabinets, getting ready for today!
What a lot of STUFF we have in the kitchen! It's all neatly packed into Costco boxes in the middle bedroom, ready to be put back... minus all the things I don't use.
Interspersed with our kitchen work, life goes on. Talking to Erin on Skype is so fun! We talked to Luanne the other day, too, and that was lovely.
Before my kitchen "went dark," I needed to make one more recipe for an upcoming SCD booklet, Lemon Drizzle Cake, so I made it for Easter. It was quite good! Easter was a lovely day - we all gathered at 4:00 at Mom and Dad's place.
Gretchen and Chris were there, with Anders in the background. Here they are, getting ready to set Anders up to hunt for eggs, etc.
Mmmmmm, those big carrots Aunt Gretchen makes every year are great! She takes an icing bag and fills it with cheetos, then plastic grass and ties the top.
Aunt Gretchen and mom.
Jeff and Heather.
Anders.
All the hunters, before they started trading. You can hunt until you have your own kid...
Luke and Anders were trying to make sure they found everything...
Cute family... with one more on the way!!
And now back to our kitchen... I've moved us out to the dining room, and it's an efficient space! Last night we finished emptying everything else out because Fernando likes to start work early!
The fully empty kitchen....
Well, almost... I forgot the cleaning stuff under the sink. Gotta put that somewhere...
Here's a last look at the bookcase... see ya', bookcase! You've done a great job!
David feels right at home in our makeshift kitchen... with our electric kettle, microwave and toaster, we're pretty comfortable. There's a dishwashing bucket in the bathtub.
For me, nothing was going to stop me from enjoying the Royal Wedding with my scones and tea today! I was handy in case the workers had questions, but otherwise, I was havin' a good time!
Meanwhile, these guys and a couple others worked hard. They'll be back tomorrow, so things are really happening. I'm wanting to get a piece of art to go over the table and I saw some in the Cafe at Biola that I really like, so I'm thinking of getting a print by Scott Moore... take a look at his website!
Now they've left, and here's how it looks. See the new cabinet he built to replace the microwave cabinet?
Well, that's all for now. I'll update as we go, and hopefully it won't take long before this kitchen is done!

Wow, that was so fun! I feel a little sad about the bookcase, but can hardly wait to see the new look!! Great pictures, all of them!!!! Thank you so much for posting!
I looked at the Scott Moore artwork and like the one with the California map and a woodie. Or the one with the little house...
So wierd to see the kitchen all torn up! But, I can't wait to see the end result!! =0)
FUN!
love, carol
Thanks for all the pictures and running commentary! That new kitchen will be so nice!!
Thanks, you guys. Yes, Lu, I think those are the same two I like! I'm leaning toward the one with a little house with cookbooks, flower clippers, etc. in the foreground. I'd love that california travel one with a postcard postmarked in Long Beach for one of the guest rooms! But the lemons in the fruit packing label one is great too... and I have some labels that we got in Claremont at an old packing house that I could frame to go with it. Hmmmm, fun to think about it.
Tom and I tried to remove our linoleum floor and we ended up paying the guy who redid our wood floors. It wasn't worth the effort.
Like everyone else, I can't wait to see the end result :)
Granite countertops! How cool. After Sam gets married off I'll think about installing my own! I love seeing the ol' gas burner trumped up on those wheels. She's a good ol' girl.
Wow! Strange to see the kitchen so bare! Thanks for posting pics, can't wait for more!
