Tuesday we went to Huntington Beach. Here you see the kids helping me figure out how to make the pay machine thingy work. I pushed the wrong button and David is now in the process of trying to get my $6 refunded from the city.
We had fun! The waves were really big and Sam had fun running out to meet them. If I look relaxed here it's because Sam's not in the ocean or is in the ocean with one of his sisters. If he was in the ocean by himself, I'd be sitting up, scanning the water to make sure he's still upright.
Here he is with Madeline, as they head out to meet another wave.
The girls really wanted to make funnel cakes, so Monday night we made them. Mmmm, they were good!
Here are the finished cakes, before we all demolished them!
Wednesday morning, bright and early, David dropped us off at Disneyland! They needed those hoodies that they brought with them... the weather was nice and cool last week. We stayed until 11:00 p.m.!
The kids went on the canoe, which was new for them, and it gave their arms a workout!
I got a salmon salad, while the kids got the broccoli cheese soup in a bread boule. We all really liked our lunch!
A photo moment, after riding the carousel and before running to the next ride. They rode Thunder Mountain 6 times, all together, and that's their favorite ride.
I watched the fireworks while they were on one of their Thunder Mountain excursions. Pretty!
Thursday morning we tied and re-tied all our stuff into the back of the truck and headed south to San Mateo campground, in San Clemente. We had a girls' tent and a boys' tent, and a chair for everyone.
Setting up the boys' tent.
Out behind our tents, the kids and grandpa took part in a cherry pit spitting contest... you have to be careful not to inhale the pits when you're about to spit them!
Roasting marshmallows...
I started reading Farmer Boy in the evening, then we continued it in the morning, taking turns reading. It's a really good book, and tells all about Almanzo's life when he was just 9 - the same age as Sam.
All day Friday was spent at San Clemente State Beach, which is a wonderful beach! The things I like about it are:
- The train goes by pretty often
- It's a short walk from the steps to the waves
- The parking lot is metered so you can stay a long time or a short time
- The parking lot is really close to the sand so it's easy to add quarters
- There is a nice snack bar where you can get good food
When Sam wasn't in the water, he was digging or being buried by Abigail.
But mostly, Sam and Abigail were in the water, having a blast.
Madeline was too, but she was also reading a really good book and trying not to damage her skin too much. Good girl.
Sam and Abby kept busy!
Back at camp, here's a peek inside the girls' tent.
In the evening, we enjoyed being around camp! Playing cards, roasting marshmallows and reading were the main activities.
Saturday morning, before packing up, we all headed to McDonald's for breakfast. That coffee sure tasted good!
And on the way home, with camping behind us, we had to stop for lunch at Sr. Pedro's for fish tacos and taquitos! It's a tradition, and the first place I ever tasted a fish taco. Now I love them to pieces.
This is how you do it at Sr. Pedros.
Camp Grandma wouldn't be complete without a visit to See's candy to each fill their own little box. Sam doesn't really like chocolate, so he didn't want any.
Sunday morning at Granada we got to see Aunt Gretchen and Gruncle Kirk, plus Grammy and Poppa and some people who know the kids. As we were leaving for church, with the kids' suitcases in tow, Sam said, "It's gonna be so hard to leave here! ... It's kind of like having to jump off a cliff." Ohhhhh, we know how you feel, Sam.
Cousin Abby Stevens is always fun to talk to! After church we went to Del Taco for lunch, then headed to Gretchen and Chris's house in the Valley. This was our "central location" to meet up with the DeHart grandparents for the kids' second week of Camp Grandma. We all had such a wonderful week.
Life is precious, family is precious, time together is precious, and we're grateful to the Lord for his many blessings.
Amen.

Oh, that all sounds like so much fun! The kids are lucky to have such fun, active grandaparents, I'm sure they look forward to Camp Grandma every year. We're reading Farmer Boy right now, too!

What a special and fun week you created for those kids they will never forget!! I'm sure the girls felt the same way Sam did about leaving.
Thank you so much for posting these! I am so jealous of these experiences.
